Operators paid about C$178 million (US$156.9 million) for natural gas leases in British Columbia at a sale held today.

The figure dwarfs those of the last five monthly lease sales this year, where companies spent a total of C$68 million.

The auction proceeds rank as the ninth-best in British Columbia history, Energy Minister Blair Lekstrom said in a Globe and Mail report.
